The reflect of the world in the man

In an unsuspected way each day of our entire lives we afford the job of being humans, we know our abilities, weaknesses and more about ourselves, also we can understand because of the intelligence of others what we have done and what we are supposed to do but what is the truly psychological structure and order of what makes us humans? And what is more important, who or what determines this? I want to introduce a psychological profile of the main character of George Orwell’s novel “1984”. This man is commonly known as Winston, the start of what we can see as a revolution and nonconformity, but why is this character related with human psychology? Well after knowing him in the development of the chapters I will raise my idea for defend literally why each one of us is an individualist” Oceania”.

We have seen Winston like a kind of lone hero possessor of an unconscious power that has an ability the rest of the people of his generation seems to lose more and more with each day that pass in its perfect system, and is that inside Winton´s mind he still have the strange and kind of pragmatic sense of humanity,moral and classic ethics the party has tried to make look like a horrendous past in which future and present can´t be based, so in a superficial way we can say he is conscious or he develops this kind of good conscience in the way the story continues and one prove of this is his constant nonconformity an habit of writing in his diary about how easy can freedom can be seen in a basic analog of “this is this”, just as simple as that, this let us know his mind in the aspect of his constitution and wishes that inspire even if he don’t want it his acts, we can see he is a character of a melancholic ideology and a really like smart or “calculating man” that remembers this lost sense of humanity and it use it as his most powerful weapon even if the reader can feel mercy for him .Another aspect we must denotate of this character is his poetic or philosophic perception of his reality, actually it seems he understand, he cries and he seems to be not describing issues because it almost seems in some occasions that it describes the corrupt reflection of a possessive and controller human mind, is worthy of painful ideas about its “universe” and it proposes the ideology of a party as a rotten, imminent, pessimistic and progressive threat that conforms the human existence of those who rea aware of the truth and those who do not.


“It was as though some huge force were pressing down upon you – something that penetrated inside your skull, battering against your brain, frightening you out of your beliefs, persuading you, almost, to deny the evidence of your senses. In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable…what then?” (Orwell, 1949)

Now that we have certain perception of the main character in the taxonomy of the personalities to introduce again my premise and take it from another point we must remember now the operation and structure of Oceania (and how has been controlled and even stablished by the party). The party redirected the hate and all the bad stuff of life for people not to hate and analyze their situation so in this way they incite an agreement or feeling of hate for and between other countries outside, we can understand this as the part´s job but below this are social changes that not only works in words of hate, there are persuasive entities that are responsible for spreading these condemning words , we can call this entities as ministers and they operate in different ideal assumptions under the same command and regime that define them as the ministers of love, peace, abundance and truth. Presumably we can identify this (under a classic ideology) as the perfect ramification of how it should work humanity but everyone that understands by the other hand how does it works each minister can conclude that perfection is stained with mud and on top of the lie.

“To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself. That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word "doublethink" involved the use of doublethink” (Orwell, 1949)

Well now lest check what we have till this moment, we have the premise of why each one of us has its own Oceania that is basically the main idea of this essay for defend something respecting George Orwell`s novel then and for an introduction for the premise we already contextualize both ideas by their specific sides, so its time now to join them. Is going to seem kind of basic the explanation but shows an interesting relation between literature and humans, is just to analyze our brain just a little bit see that our entire lives work as it functions Oceania, but why? Well each one of us knows that we can identify two opposite parts of our unknown mind and these parts are the unconscious and the conscience, it is kind of basic for us the common definitions but if you actually don`t catch the idea is just simple, our conscience in this world it is subjected to an ideological standard of straightness that shouldn’t be broken, under what we know deep about us  we have correct parameters for our entire life that tell us what we should do or what not and that also play with our morals and ethics in the constant topic of what it is supposed to be done by us and what we really feel inside our inexplicable psychological constitution that we must do. It is prudent now to resemble the relations and similarities from our conscious part to the dominant party of Oceania because in addition to having aesthetic and utopian paradigms both sides try to oppress and reign on their opposite under the prejudice that they work in the name of the good that even themselves create in their accommodation. The man always feels that his side that reasoning the most  is the alfa side  as I said before because of this for us taking something from the point of the unconscious is not completely valid or approved for be substantiated and in this way we evidence our own internal political totalitarianism with your own ideas and decisions taking into account each different categories you can find in your life, the example in the book is quite simple with just 4 ministries  but we just have to remember first one that is more easy to tend to generalize like in a society than in a no completely known and unspectacled universe as is the human mind.

By the other hand it is important to know now what could be the  contrary part of our conscience and the massive party and may be it will sound kind of strange but the main Winston is alike with our irrational and kind of instinctive side, we live thinking about how sleepy, quiet and inactive our unconscious side seems to be but in relation to this and to what we feel and perceive each day this side wakes up for molding even with closed eyes a character or idea, and it is just in the same way that Winston  develops itself who knew the world in its splendor and under its changes forgets like in a dream what was the truly sense of being human and live between the freedom and the knowledge, in this same way he creates in a progressive way its new personality that it seems to look reserved outside but really revolutionary and desiring a change inside with the perception of a condition each time more and more pessimistic and even brave or risky of itself and its surrounding.

Now intertwined Winston and  the unconscious we must also have that under the contradictory of their main ideas they seem to be also the ones who work in the name of good in the same way as their opposites, the fact that their actions are  seen much later and not very well received is something different but for example when we poetically follow the heart or our feelings as once Walt Whitman did it we find true welfare and not based on what we have been taught or imposed through the time and the rules as it was in this example the old and once mandatory free verse, this is just an analogy of what can happens when the side we believe is not participatory many times makes presence in our lives in a radical way.

Another quite common example of our unconscious power, development and its circumstantial benefits is the moment in which based again in experience and perception we can foresee things and take benefits of it as if it were the creation of a new musical instrument or genre, Winston without searching it finds we create criterial even if he was not the first one to perceive it and feel the imminent need for a change. Actually, it may sound even romantic but a heart feels many times neither mind nor experiences and knowledge can hide, justifying under good or bad targets and means, Winston makes by the intersection of his unconscious and “heart” something that would lead him to his unstable existence and progress live misfortune.

Understood this is more than clear we own our internal oppressor party and our own revolutionary constant  kind of melancholic, afraid, a little repressed  man or individual that by the way is attached to  all under a common factor of belonging that we should not forget, and it is that within their differences these literary elements of the story and  psychological concepts  subsist in the same place that encloses them and makes that in some necessary way they complement each other for the equilibrium of the dystopian world of George Orwell and for the man himself and his caliber of lucidity, kindness and evil among other characteristics, variated elements that as well as conform a person  are the reflection of a place like Oceania or even the whole world to know on both sides, everyone is Oceania.
